Only Entry

Regarding my recent entering into a new world, I have decided to study upon it a bit more in detail. However, I must say, it is probably the lowest point in a Harvard-graduated man of science's life when your most reliable information about a new world comes from trading cards, a video game series from the 90's, a Japanese animated show and 15 or so movies.

And I'm STILL not sure how the heck those pieces of "geek" memorabilia and electronic games are somehow accurate when cross-referenced!

But regardless, the subject of this study is the so-titled "Pokémon World". In all of my research, I could not find a single specific name for that new world other than this basic moniker. I do hear some of its inhabitants referring to it as "Earth", and there are actually quite a few places within it that are either reminiscent of or exactly the same as actual places on our own planet (according to files I found, Mew is a Pokémon first discovered at Guyana).

What are Pokémon, though? Pokémon, from the material I've gathered, are creatures that inhabit that planet in all of its areas, not unlike our own Earth's animals. The resemblances go even further than that, of course. Pokémon also follow a food chain and they are able to adapt to other environments in a few cases. However, obviously you won't see a jellyfish demonstrating psychic abilities, or a polar bear actually shooting glacier spears from its mouth. Pokémon are creatures that somehow carry a special power within them, able to utilize attacks of many different types, depending on their own physical type. These "types" are classification methods according to the moveset, natural ability and physiological format of the Pokémon itself. For example, fish-like Pokémon are often (not always) associated with the "Water" type, or a humanoid Pokémon is often found in the "Fighting" type. Pokémon are also capable of demonstrating a special manner of growth, referred to as "evolution", where it will pass from one stage to another depending on certain factors. The most common factor that leads to Evolution is the gain of experience in the wild or in a battle (which I'll get to in a few), but other Pokémon require more specific methods to evolve and thus being more powerful, such as being traded, being exposed to certain stones, holding certain items, etc.

Speaking in terms of human population, the demographic density is much more distributed in territory. Humans in this world are a lot more advanced than in our own, having more respect and restrain towards natural habitats and the environment. Towns and even a few economic centers are smaller than in our world, but even then this world is not freed of pollution. Some Pokémon are actually born from it, it seems. However, there are still surprising scientific advances in this world. Not only do they have casual holographic transmission available for pedestrian use, they somehow invented, way before their version of the Industrial Revolution happened, a device capable of transforming matter into energy, in seconds, with no consequences or side effects to the user, and capable of being used on living creatures while causing them no harm. Called a Poké Ball, this device lets you "Catch" a Pokémon and store it in a team of six at max. Catching one over the maximum will send it to a PC "Box", where it will be stored safely until the trainer collects it for using in the battlefield.

And speaking of battlefield, Pokémon are often captured by "Pokémon Trainers", usually children over 10 years of age, to take part in non-lethal, legalized "battles" to test their might and mutual bond. If a Pokémon faints during a battle, it can no longer continue. While it sounds horrible at first, these beings are in no real danger in battle, since their wounds and ailments can be quickly healed at "Pokémon Centers", which will leave them ready to battle again. Battles are taken so seriously that it has become a world-wide sport, where the most skilled trainers reunite in leagues to see who is the most apt to take on the Elite Four of each region, and their respective Champion, all of which are said to be the "best of the best Pokémon Masters".

My studies so far are few, however. The information I received, like previously mentioned, comes from fandom sources. Right now, Flavio is strongly considering joining this craze. He says that Pokémon can be bonded with, becoming good friends with humans. However, there ARE criminal syndicates that use Pokémon for nefarious purposes, some more abstract than others.

But those, for now, stand in no real regard to me. Flavio speaks of it too often, and quite honestly I just finished reading on this Pokémon called "Metagross", and it got me interested.

I'll resume more of my findings on another entry soon enough.
Doc's first notes on the Pokémon World. Hope you enjoy it.

Great read, Speeds. It's interesting read how Doc is doing his best to examine Pokemon in a serious and literal matter, with slight comical elements. But, I just want to politely correct you on something, Pokemon began in the 90's, not the 80's, even in Japan.
