Hey, everyone! Extremespeeds here, and today I would like to write something that's a little personal. I keep hearing and seeing these rants about Sonic the Hedgehog games and other media, and frankly, if one wants to express their opinion, okay. But there are some comments that make me sick everytime I read them on forums and public domain sites. I mean, there's fans, and there's haters, but some of these comments make Dr. Eggman look like a boy scout!

I thought about making this list about the things I like about Sonic games. This list is for fans or at least people who like the franchise, so their opinions can be freely said and shown so we can have a decent, rational argument.

BUT HERE'S SOMETHING TO READ FIRST BEFORE COMMENTING: This list has a few conditions I've estabilished, so people will at least know what was I thinking and a bit about my tastes:

1: This is made entirely out of MY points of view and MY thoughts, so it might not be entirely accurate with yours. But again, this is for discussion, so if there's any observations you would like to add, feel free to disagree with me. I swear I'll respect your decisions.

2: This isn't meant to be disrespectful to fans of the franchise in ANY WAY. This is just a discussion to see each person's tastes and preferences, and to compare ideas in a friendly manner. This is NOT supposed to be harmful to one's moral, even if I tried.

===3 Things I like about the Sonic franchise==============================

1: Sonic the Hedgehog 2006

Now, I know that the game is heavily criticized due to the gameplay (I played it myself, gameplay REALLY sucks), but the blogs I read always forget the game's basics. I mean, I never saw anyone talking about the story, levels and/or voice acting. Those details are never mentioned! It's like "Man, this gameplay's SO terrible, I don't even wanna know the rest!" It's not like that! I mean, the environments and cutscenes were pretty well done, the animation wasn't half bad and the voice acting was good (GO JASON GRIFFITH!!!). Besides, I kinda thought that Eggman looked fascinating in a more realistic look (he's so more real human-like it's scary!). Yeah, the mouth movements had some dealys, but I think that was a little mishap. Besides, did anyone stopped to think that Sonic actually DIES in this game?? That's pretty big deal!! Even if it's just for a few levels!!

But my favorite part has to be Solaris. Good God, I LOVED that boss!! The design was creative, the background was genuinely creepy and distorted, and the battle is just EPIC! The orchestra version of "His World" works like a charm.

If there's something I don't like about this game?? The gameplay. And, let's be honest, if Elise had the Flames of Disaster with her the whole time, WHY DIDN'T SHE SEARCH FOR SILVER AND TALKED TO HIM RIGHT AWAY?? Great move there, Your Highness!

2: Sonic the Werehog

Again, this is mostly point of view. You see, I like Sonic, Jason Griffith's talent, and werewolves. I freakin love werewolves. They are the best creatures ever to be put in fiction (except for Jacob... Yeah, sorry, but I'm not into Twilight... at all...). So when I heard that Sonic was going to become a were-creature in Sonic Unleashed, I immediately waited until the game came out. And I wasn't dissapointed! Well, actually, the PS2 version is lame, but the Xbox 360 version was awesome!

It was exactly like I thought: Sonic as a Werehog, under full control of himself, making the monsters and Eggman cry uncle with punches and other cool moves. I only didn't expect the stretching arms thing, but when I saw it, it only added to the awesomeness in my opinion. Besides, let's be frank here, that short "Night of the Werehog" was a lot of fun.

Now, for Jason Griffith. The guy was a perfect voice actor with a lot of experience from other animes and games. And guess how much was I surprised when I found out that Sonic Unleashed was his favorite game! Besides, his voice acting for the Werehog form... man, that must be hard! I wonder how he didn't end up with laryngitis after those recording sections.

Any complaints about the game? Lack of material in the Wii/PS2 version. That's all.

3: Chris Thorndyke

Yeah, I know. Chris is a target of many critics when the subject's Sonic X in general. But personally, I don't mind him that much. Okay, let's take this part by part.

The first and most overused criticism about him is when he steals someone's role from the games, like receiving Shadow's rings when this was supposed to be Rouge's role. Well, let's be frank, animes about video game are much like a game's movie adaptation to me: something is going to change, one way or another. I've been so used to this that I don't see any point about complaining now. It's a very common thing, and hey, he needed to do SOMETHING useful in the anime (I'll get to that in a minute). Yeah, it took some important roles out of people, but as long as Chris doesn't get a freaking Super Form, that's fine for me.

Now the complaint about his personality. Chris, according to fans, is more of a crybaby than he is a protagonist. My defense? HE IS A FREAKING 10 YEAR OLD BOY!! Of course he isn't that tough! Plus, his parents are NEVER AROUND until later seasons, and he only has a housemaid and a butler to keep him from harm! Don't you think he still has SOME stuff that he can't do alone!?!?

One critic I kinda agree with you is his constant complaint about lack of friends. WHAT ABOUT DANNY, FRANCES AND HELEN!? Don't they have ANY significance in your life, Chris?? They always walk with you, they met you not too long ago, and there's even lots of Chris-Helen fanfics on the web (look for it, I know there is SOMETHING about it).

Personally, I don't mind Chris, and I kinda liked him when I was younger. That's why I included him in my stories. In fact, I'm even trying to make him look tougher! Not "main protagonist" tougher, but still a little more independent. Personally, I like him. And I see no reason to complain.

====================================================================

So that's it, folks. 3 things I personally like about Sonic. Feel free to comment below and don't feel offended, this is all for the sake of conversation. Any complaints?? Any counter arguments or even agreemnts?? Post below and don't be shy. ^_^

Good on you for expressing opinions even if they don't align with the common accepted ones. I wish the fandom was in a place where people would feel more comfortable with expressing relatively benign opinions, especially considering that...well, it's Sonic the Hedgehog. A bit silly to get too intense about it (although I can't say I'm not guilty of getting intense about it at times, hahaha)

Somewhat confused about the whole "If Elise knew she had the Flames of Disaster, why didn't she tell Silver?" thing though. As I haven't played the game/looked into the plot for a LONG, I don't remember the full extent of how much Elise really knew about her powers beyond what Eggman brought up. Only reason I could think of that Elise would tell Silver about it would be to get Silver off of Sonic's case since he thought Sonic was the Iblis Trigger. However, if Silver decided at that moment that it made ELISE the Iblis Trigger (which, well, she pretty much was)...well, assuming that Amy wouldn't be around to tell Silver to cut it out, him killing Elise would have really messed stuff up. If you could explain what you meant by that, I'd appreciate it! I'm probably missing something.

I have heard complaints about the storyline, but they're mainly about how the whole time travel thing is essentially a clusterfuck when it comes to execution. (Ah yeah, and the whole Sonelise angle. How we managed to get "BAWWW BEASTIALITY, SICK GROSS EWW" out of what essentially amounts to nothing but an unnecessary romantic subplot is beyond me, especially when some of the most popular ships are of two different species, like Knuckles/Rouge and Tails/Cosmo.) Apparently the plot was being written by several people over the course of the game's development and one of them just up and quit. Considering the circumstances of the development, what we ended up getting was...well, it definitely could have been worse. LONG STORY SHORT: The game definitely had a lot of potential, but it didn't end up getting what it needed...time! I remember when footage of it first came out, it definitely had promise. I was plenty hyped for it. Perhaps there'll be another chance for that sort of Sonic game to come around and to actually succeed, but it'll take some time.

Interesting that you mention people complaining about the gameplay though, there's currently a mod in place that's porting Sonic '06 to the PC version of Generations, cutscenes, playing as Sonic, Silver, and Shadow and all the trimmin's.

As I recall, there's a mod that allows for Sonic '06 physics, but that can be turned off. Not flawless, not much room for Amigo gameplay, is limited to what Generations can do but, hey, probably the closest thing to a remake you might get.

(Ah, yes, and thank you for acknowledging the whole "CHRIS THORNDYKE IS 10 YEARS OLD" thing that people seem to fail to get. I remember when I first went to watch Sonic X, from what I heard of it I was prepared to dislike Chris but...people seem to overexaggerate the extent to which he's actually involved with everything. He didn't end up bothering me one bit! Then again, most people complaining about Sonic X aren't exactly the audience that Sonic X is aimed for...and it sorta makes sense for Chris to be in those scenes where other characters used to be, I always figured he was supposed to be the character that the younger fans could project themselves on.)
